Negative carryover in iGaming revshare: how it works, with examples
What negative carryover means in casino and sportsbook revshare deals, how a negative NGR month affects the next ones, and the questions to agree before signing.
Updated on 30 Oct 2026
In a revshare deal the affiliate earns a share of the NGR their players generate. NGR can be negative: when players win more than they lose, after bonuses and fees. Negative carryover decides what happens to that negative month.
Without carryover
A negative month pays zero, and the next month starts again from zero. The operator absorbs the loss.
With carryover
The negative amount is carried into the next months and deducted from future NGR before any revshare is paid. The affiliate only earns again once the loss has been recovered.
An example
An affiliate on 30% revshare has this NGR over four months:
| Month | NGR | Without carryover | With carryover |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 2,000 € | 600 € | 600 € |
| February | −3,000 € | 0 € | 0 € (−3,000 € carried) |
| March | 2,500 € | 750 € | 0 € (−500 € still carried) |
| April | 2,000 € | 600 € | 450 € (on 1,500 €) |
| Total | 1,950 € | 1,050 € |
One big winner in February costs the affiliate 900 € with carryover.
Why operators use it
In sportsbooks especially, a few large wins can make a month negative. Without carryover the operator pays revshare on good months and absorbs bad ones alone. Carryover shares the risk with the affiliate, the same way revshare shares the upside.
Questions to agree before signing
- Is there carryover at all? Many programs advertise "no negative carryover" to attract affiliates.
- Does it reset? Some deals reset the carried balance every month, quarter or year.
- Per brand or across all brands? A loss on one brand can be offset by another, or not.
- What counts in NGR? Bonuses, taxes and payment fees deducted from GGR change the result.

Revshare is calculated every month on the NGR imported from the brands' CRM reports, with negative carryover when the deal includes it, and an approval step before commissions reach affiliates' balances.
